Wildcat Women Compete in Pre-NCAA Meet

On Saturday, Oct. 16, the Villanova women's cross country team traveled to Bloomington, Ind., to compete in the Pre-NCAA meet. The meet was held on the same course where the 1999 NCAA Cross Country Championships will be held on Monday, Nov. 22. At the pre-meet, a short-handed Wildcat squad raced to a 20th place finish with 485 points. Villanova participated in the meet without the services of sophomore Sarah-Vance Goodman, junior Ann McGranahan and junior Geraldine McCarthy.

Senior Carmen Douma (Cambridge, Ontario) led the Wildcat charge with an 11th place finish in a time of 17:39.40. Rookie Liz Awtrey (Burke, Va.) ran well for the Wildcats, finishing 39th in 18:04.99. Just two places behind Awtrey was senior Kristen Nicolini (Annapolis, Md) who was timed in 18:07.38 and placed 43rd.

After Nicolini, Villanova's number four finisher was freshman Sheila Klick (Lansdowne, Pa.) who earned a 174th place finish with a time of 19:26.45. Villanova's fifth and final runner was junior Meghan Courtney (Waterloo, N.Y.) who ran 20:50.45 to finish 220th.

The meet was won by Stanford who finished with 77 points. Colorado's Kara Wheeler was the individual champion in a time of 17:07.03.
