Villanova Travels to Indiana

The Villanova men's cross country team traveled to Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday, Oct. 16, to compete in the Pre-NCAA meet which was held on the campus of Indiana University. The meet was held on the same course where the 1999 NCAA Cross Country Championships will be held on Monday, Nov. 22. At the Pre-Meet, Villanova tallied 345 points to finish ninth. Stanford won the meet with 126 points. The individual crown was captured by Oregon's Steve Fein who was timed in 24:06.31.
Senior Scott Tantino (North Wales, Pa.) was Villanova's top finisher for the third-straight meet, placing 38th overall in a time of 24:59.17. Villanova's number two man was freshman Tom Parlapiano (Honeybrook, Pa.) who continues to run strong for the ‘Cats. Parlapiano registered a 59th place effort in 25:15.64. Running third for Villanova was senior Cory Smith (Baltimore, Md.) who posted a 63rd place effort in 25:18.06.
Two sophomores ran fourth and fifth for the Wildcats, with Eric Reese (Dushore, Pa.) placing 74th and Ben Showers (West Chester, Pa.) tallying a 111th place effort. Reese was timed in 25:26.94, while Showers was clocked in 25:48.49. Two newcomers ran sixth and seventh for Villanova with Tim Styler (Cranford, N.J.) finishing 211th in 26:58.45 and Paul Carroll (Cork, Ireland) placing 227th in 27:41.64.
Villanova will return to action on Oct. 29, when they compete in the Big East Championships at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx, N.Y.
