Villanova Captures Victory in First Cross Country Meet

NEWARK, Del. - Villanova raced its way to victory this morning as it boasted seven runners in the top-10 at the Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park. The Wildcats tallied 21 points to finish first, while the University of Pennsylvania took second with a total of 41.
Freshman Ali Smith put forth a great effort in her first collegiate cross country meet under the Villanova banner. Smith clocked in at 22:29 to finish first just ahead of junior teammate Ellen Dougherty, who secured a second place finish. Although Penn snuck in to steal the third and fourth spots, the Wildcats continued their domination by sweeping the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth places as a result of top performances by freshmen Amanda Marino, Sarah Morrison, Callie Hogan, and senior Akilah Vargas, respectively. Sophomore Kaitlyn Tallman rounded out the scoring for Villanova by taking the 10th place finish to give the Wildcats seven runners in the top-10.
