Wildcat Men Fourth At Spiked Shoe Invitational
The Villanova men¹s cross country squad put in a strong performance at the Spiked Shoe Invitational this past Saturday, with a fourth-place finish in the team competition. The meet was held at Penn State University on Sept. 27, 1997, at the PSU Blue and White Golf Courses.
Coulby Dunn (Jr., Greentown, Pa.) paced the Wildcat squad with a top-notch effort, finishing fifth overall in 26:43.10. Only a step behind Dunn was Scott Tantino (So., North Wales, Pa.), who crossed the finish line in sixth place with a time of 26:43.50.
Dean Smith (So., Baltimore, Md.) narrowly missed a top-10 finish, placing 11th in 26:56.46 as the Wildcats¹ No. 3 runner. Brock Butler (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) placed 24th among the 146 competitors in the race, clocking in at 27:19.31, while Eric Bind (Jr., Owings Mills, Md.) rounded out the Wildcat scoring with a 61st-place finish.
Bucknell captured the team championship with 43 points and four top-10 individual finishers. Host Penn State, the five-time defending champions at the Spiked Shoe Invitational, placed second with 57 points, while the Naval Academy posted 59 points.
Also competing for the Wildcats was Joseph McNamara (Jr., Granville, N.Y.), Ryan Payne (So., Gwynedd Valley, Pa.), Rich Morris (Sr., Jackson, N.J.), and Michael Bosacco (Jr., Wallingford, Pa.). McNamara and Payne both recorded solid efforts with a 72nd and 75th-place finish, respectively.
The Wildcats resume competition on Oct. 4, 1997, when they travel to Lehigh University for the Paul Short Invitational. Last season, Villanova won that meet.
