Sept. 27, 1997 Tollefson Leads Wildcats to Victory at IonaVAN CORTLAND PARK, N.Y. -- The Villanova women's cross country squad put in a dominating performance at the Iona Meet of Champions on Satuurday, Sept. 27, capturing three of the top four spots and running away with the team title at Van Cortland Park in New York. The Wildcats scored 28 points in the victory, outdistancing second-place Dartmouth, which posted 43 points. Army finished third with 77 points, Westchester Track Club fourth with 110 points and Harvard fifth with 122 points. All-American Carrie Tollefson (Jr., Dawson, Minn.) was stellar in the Wildcats' debut meet of 1997, running a time of 16:54.4 over the 5000m course to win the individual championship. Not far behind Tollefson was fellow All-American Kristine Jost (Jr., Kent Island, Md.), who finished in the runner-up spot in 16:58.8. Carmen Douma (So., Cambridge, Ontario) also put in a strong effort, placing fourth overall in 17:54.3. Running in the No. 4 spot for head coach John Marshall was Tamieka Grizzle (So., Bronx, N.Y.), who came through in fine style. Grizzle placed eighth among the 165 competitors in 18:14.0. Geraldine McCarthy (Fr., Listowel, Ireland) made her initial run as a Wildcat, and did not look like a freshman, finishing 13th in 18:34.8. Jackie Gruters (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.), Kate Etter (So., Maple Glen, Pa.) and Lony'e Johnson (So., Wilmington, Del.) also competed at the Meet of Champions for Marshall. The Wildcat women enjoy two weeks off before resuming competition on Oct. 11 at the NCAA Pre-Meet held at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. |
