Tollefson Establishes Course Record at Penn State
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - At the National Invitational held on Oct. 19 at Penn State University, Villanova's Carrie Tollefson (Jr., Dawson, Minn.) shattered the course record en route to capturing the individual championship of the meet. Tollefson, one of only two Wildcats to compete in the meet, ran a time of 16:39.88 to pace the 82 competitors.
Tollefson's time bested the previous record of 17:06, set by Georgetown All-American Miesha Marzell in1995. Tollefson's run was her fastest in 5,000 meters this season.
Tollefson was joined by teammate Carmen Douma (So., Cambridge, Ontario), who also put in an extremely strong showing. Douma covered the Blue and White Penn State Golf Course in 17:02.26 to earn runner-up honors behind Tollefson. Douma's race registered as a personal-best for the sophomore by nearly 13 seconds.
The Wildcats will resume team competition on Oct. 31, 1997, at the Big East Championship held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y.
