Wildcat Men Ninth at IC4A Championships

BRONX, N.Y. - The Villanova University men's cross country team placed ninth at the annual IC4A Championships, held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y., on Friday, Oct. 17, 1997.

The Wildcats compiled 225 points in the competition that featured 16 teams in the field. Princeton won the meet with a score of 49, while Iona (63), and Duke (122) rounded out the top three.

Villanova was led by Dean Smith (So., Baltimore, Md.) who placed ninth in the individual competition in a time of 25:16.6. Scott Tantino (So., North Wales, Pa.) also put in a strong showing for Associate head coach Jim Tuppeny, finishing 11th overall and covering the course in 25:18.8.

Coulby Dunn (Jr., Greentown, Pa.), hampered in recent weeks by the flu, finished in Villanova's No. 3 spot, placing 41st overall. Dunn, who had finished in the top five in the first two meets of the year, ran a time of 25:56.8.

Also competing for Villanova was Brock Butler (Jr., West Chester, Pa.), Ryan Payne (So., Gwynedd Valley, Pa.), Wojciec Szela (Jr., Berwyn, Pa.), and Joseph McNamara (Jr., Granville, N.Y.).

Villanova competes again on Oct. 31, 1997, on the same course when the Wildcats participate in the Big East Cross Country Championships. The Wildcat women will run Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997, at the Penn State Invitational.
