Koons Cruises to NCAA Regional Title
Nov. 11, 2006 Villanova, Pa. - Junior Frances Koons won the women's race in dominating fashion at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional and the Wildcats placed fifth as a team at Lock Haven University on Saturday afternoon. Koons notched her third win of the year with a season-best time of 20:02.9 that was nearly 30 seconds better than the rest of the field. Koons now advances to the national championship meet, which will be held on Monday, November 20 at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. The Wildcats advanced to the national championship as a team last season with a second place finish at the regional meet. Koons came in fourth in the regional meet last season.
"Frances was just out there cruising," head coach Gina Procaccio said.
Akilah Vargas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also performed very well, finishing 14th in a time of 21:11, an improvement of ten positions over her finish from last year.
Siobhan Coleman (West Lothien, Scotland), competed very well as a freshman running in her first regional, coming in with a time of 21:37, good for 32nd place.
Princeton won the team title ahead of Georgetown, while La Salle finished third. West Virginia placed fourth while the Wildcats and Bucknell tied for fifth place.
