Curtis Places Third at Pre-NCAA Meet
Oct. 14, 2006
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Senior Bobby Curtis (Louisville, Ky.) stayed with the leading group for the entire race and finished third overall out of 243 runners in the Pre-NCAA Meet on Saturday at Indiana State. Villanova finished in 17th place as a team.
"Bobby had a really good race today and a great finish, especially considering where he is coming back from," head coach Marcus O'Sullivan said. "He came through at the end and caught someone in front of him. As a team we can look at the positive of Bobby's race. We still have some work to do over the next four weeks but I believe that we are still in contention for making nationals."
Curtis covered the 8,000-meter course in 23:44 to finish just 13 seconds off the winning pace. Working his way back from missing last season, Curtis ran with the leading group with one exception late in the race, when he made a push to catch a runner ahead of him.
"Bobby is making great progress in coming back from last season," O'Sullivan said.
Curtis was the only Wildcat runner to finish in the top 50 of Saturday's race. Senior Andrew Keino (Eldoret, Kenya) finished in 24:30 and placed 52nd. He was 18 seconds ahead of classmate Michael Kerrigan (Stroudsburg, Pa.), who was in 88th place with a time of 24:48. Graduate student Milos Mitric (Krusevac, Yugoslavia) recorded a time of 24:59. Rounding out the top five for Villanova was graduate student Brian Buechel (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
Martin Fagan of Providence won the men's race with a time of 23:31, while Colorado took first place in the standings with a total of 75 points. Colorado placed all five of its counting runners in the top 30 of the field to win the team title.
Next up for the Wildcats is the BIG EAST Championship on October 27. The conference meet will be held once again at Franklin Park in Massachusetts.
NOTES: The NCAA East Regional will be held on November 11 at Lock Haven University ... Qualifying teams and individuals from the regional races will advance to the national meet on November 20 ... The championship race is also held at Indiana State.
