Villanova Women's Cross Country Set to Battle at NCAA Pre-Meet
VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova women's cross country team will participate in one of the nation's toughest competitions on Saturday, Oct. 11, 1997, at the NCAA Pre-Meet, held on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
The meet will feature 12 of the nation's top 25 teams among the 30-squad field, including top-ranked Stanford, the defending national champions, No. 2-ranked Brigham Young, and the No. 3-ranked Wisconsin Badgers. The Wildcats, currently ranked No. 3 in the nation with Wisconsin, will be competing in only their second meet of the season. On Sept. 27, Villanova captured the team championship of the Iona Meet of Champions, held at the Van Cortlandt Park in New York. Carrie Tollefson, a junior from Dawson, Minn., won the individual race, while Kristine Jost, a junior from Kent Island, Md., placed second.
"As far as competition goes, this meet will, without question, be our toughest of the season," said head coach John Marshall. "However, it is also only our second meet of the year, and it is too early to be concerned about winning. Right now, our main objectives will be to learn the course, run hard and return in November prepared for the NCAA Championships."
The seedings for the NCAA Pre-Meet are as follows: 1. Iowa State; 2. Nebraska; 3. Arkansas; 4. North Carolina; 5. Northern Arizona; 6. Brigham Young; 7. Texas-San Antonio; 8. Villanova; 9.
