NEW YORK, N.Y.— The BIG EAST Conference announced their weekly Athlete of the Week per press release. Villanova Men’s Swimming student-athlete Tyler Nussbaum was named the Male Athlete of the Week. This is the first time that the senior has received this honor.
This past weekend the Wildcats traveled to Princeton to compete in the Big Al Open. Throughout the meet, Nussbaum remained strong as he broke two school records on the weekend. In the 100 breast prelims, he clocked in at a time of 54.69 which broke the previous Villanova school record set by Mike Schwankl in 1996. He finished fourth overall in the event. Next, Nussbaum went on to break the Villanova school record in the 200 breaststroke by nearly a second which was also set by Mike Schwankl in 1996.
"Tyler's performances this weekend were nothing short of spectacular. We knew those records were going to be in jeopardy with him in February. But we did not expect him to be this fast, this early in the season," Swimming head coach Rick Simpson said.
Nussbaum and the Wildcats will back in action on Jan. 6 when they travel to Kings Points, N.Y. to compete against Merchant Marine.
