Wildcats Finish Competition at Big Al Open with Fifth Place Finish

PRINCETON, N.J.--Villanova wound down three days of competition at the Big Al Open on Sunday morning and evening at DeNunzio Pool and the Wildcats finished in fifth place out of nine teams at the meet hosted by Princeton this weekend. Six finishes in the top-eight on Sunday helped Villanova maintain its position in the team standings.
The top individual finishes for the Wildcats on Sunday came in the 1650 yard freestyle, where juniors Russell Paulson (West Chester, Pa.) and Jordan Bickhart (Wyomissing, Pa.) came in fifth and seventh, respectively. Paulson touched the wall in 16:11.93 and Bickhart registered a time of 16:18.34.
Junior Braden Clarke (Chappaqua, N.Y.) placed eighth in the 200 backstroke and classmate Scott Thiede (Bethesda, Md.) finished eighth in the 100 free. Clarke had a time of 1:56.71 in the finals of the 200 back and Thiede finished the 100 free with a finals time of 46.52. He had earlier come in third in 46.14 during the preliminaries on Sunday morning.
In addition to their individual races both Clarke and Thiede helped Villanova come in seventh in the 400 freestyle relay, which was the meet's last event. Clarke led off the relay with a split of 48.45 and Thiede took the anchor leg with a team-best split of 46.83.
Sophomore Ben Smith (Sudbury, Mass.) placed eighth in the finals of the 200 butterfly (1:55.80) after posting a time of 1:52.00 in the preliminaries, when he was fourth out of 30 swimmers. He also swam the anchor leg of the Wildcats "B" entry in the 400 free relay and produced a split of 46.77 as Villanova finished in ninth place.
Also scoring team points for the Wildcats on Sunday were freshman Jason Moyer (Center Valley, Pa.) and sophomore Kyle Grant (Winnetka, Ill.). Moyer finished 14th in the "B" final of the 100 free (46.91) and Grant registered a time of 1:56.40 in the "B" final of the 200 back to come in 16th.
Villanova finished the three-day meet with a total of 375 points. Tournament host Princeton won the team title, while Columbia, Brown and Rider also finished ahead of the Wildcats in the team standings.
A break for final exams and the holiday season now awaits for Villanova, which returns to action with a home meet against Widener on Wednesday, January 11.
