Three Wildcats Advance to Top Final on Second Day at Big Al Open

PRINCETON, N.J.--On the second day of competition in the Big Al Open three Villanova athletes advanced to the "A" level final of their respective events at DeNunzio Pool on Saturday evening. With one day remaining in this weekend's meet the Wildcats are in fifth place out of nine teams competing.
Junior Braden Clarke (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and freshman Jason Moyer (Center Valley, Pa.) both advanced to the finals of the 100 yard backstroke, where Clarke finished seventh (52.53) and Moyer eighth (52.60). They both qualified for the "A" final from an original field of 37 swimmers, with Clarke coming in fifth in the preliminaries on Saturday morning. Sophomore Kyle Grant (Winnetka, Ill.) reached the "B" final of the 100 back and finished 12th with a time of 52.55 in the finals.
In the 200 freestyle junior Scott Thiede (Bethesda, Md.) swam a season-best time of 1:40.91 and finished fifth out of 51 entries in the preliminaries. He went on to post an eighth place finish in the "A" final (1:42.29). Classmate Russell Paulson (West Chester, Pa.) came in 13th in the "B" final of the 200 free with a time of 1:43.66 after earlier placing 11th in the preliminary heats.
Villanova had four swimmers advance to the finals in the 100 butterfly, with sophomores Ben Smith (Sudbury, Mass.) and Grant reaching the "B" final and placing 12th and 14th, respectively. Smith touched the wall in 51.65 in the finals and Grant had a time of 51.87. In the "C" final Clarke and Moyer finished 22nd and 23rd, respectively, with times of 52.60 and 52.68.
In the 400 individual medley senior Ted Sukramani (Williamsburg, Va.) and Smith both advanced to the "B" final. Sukramani finished 13th overall with a time of 4:08.08 in the finals, a mark that was more than four seconds faster than what he swam in the preliminaries earlier in the day. Smith came in 16th (4:20.97) in the finals. Freshmen Roy Sung (Wayland, R.I.) and tony sipala (South Glastonbury, Conn.) reached the "C" finals and came in 18th (4:15.23) and 21st (4:26.32), respectively.
Two relays were held during competition on Saturday, including the 200 yard medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay. The Wildcats came in ninth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:35.98 and a lineup of Clarke, Sung, Smith and Moyer. In the 800 free relay the quartet of Smith, junior Jordan Bickhart (Wyomissing, Pa.), Sipala and freshman Chris Tamanini (Kingston Twp., Pa.) finished 11th (7:15.25).
The schedule on Sunday at DeNunzio Pool features preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 5 p.m. Events to be contested on Sunday are the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and the 400 free relay.
NOTES: In the individual swimming events the top 24 competitors in the preliminaries advance to the finals and are grouped into eight entries each in an "A", "B" or "C" level final.
