PRINCETON, N.J.--In the final event contested on Saturday night Villanova raced to a second place finish in the 800 yard freestyle relay and the Wildcats stand in fifth place out of nine teams entering the final day of competition in the Big Al Open at DeNunzio Pool, a three-day meet being hosted by Princeton this weekend.
In the 800 free relay the lineup of freshman Katrin Heider (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany), juniors Natalie Elphick (Durban, South Africa) and Roxy Tammadge (Durban, South Africa) and freshman Sara Jurek (Gilbert, Ariz.) registered a time of 7:30.70 and finished less than 1.5 seconds off the winning time set by a Princeton quartet. Heider led off the relay with the fastest split for Villanova with a time of 1:51.59.
Heider swam the 200 free three times on Saturday and had a range of less than half a second in the times she registered. She placed fourth in the "A" final of the individual 200 free with a time of 1:51.48 in the finals after earlier placing second in the preliminaries, when she touched the wall in 1:51.14. Elphick and Tammadge reached the "B" final of the 200 free and placed 10th (1:53.03) and 14th (1:54.34), respectively. Both Edwards and junior Leigh Anne Patterson (Cherry Hill, N.J.) qualified for the "A" final in the 400 individual medley. Edwards stood in fourth place and Patterson in eighth after their first swims on Saturday morning.
Senior Yolana Du Plessis (Boksburg, South Africa) came in sixth in the "A" final of the 100 backstroke. She recorded times of 57.13 in the finals and 56.81 in the preliminaries, when she placed fourth overall.
The Wildcats also recorded a fifth place finish in the 200 medley relay, in which the quartet of Du Plessis, junior Erin Malone (Sydney, Australia), Edwards and Heider had a time of 1:46.47. Malone was making her season debut for Villanova and also registered an 11th place individual finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.09 in the finals.
