Tammadge Wins 500 Yard Freestyle on First Day of Big Al Open at Princeton

Friday's Preliminary Results
PRINCETON, N.J.--Villanova opened competition on Friday at the three-day Big Al Open being hosted by Princeton at DeNunzio Pool and junior Roxy Tammadge (Durban, South Africa) won the 500 yard freestyle to highlight the team's Friday results. After the conclusion of events on Friday the Wildcats stand in fifth place as a team with 85 points.
Preliminaries for most of the day's events were held on Friday morning and the finals followed this evening. Tammadge swam a leg of the 200 yard freestyle relay for Villanova and then came right back to win the 500 free, which was the first individual event contested. She also closed the evening by anchoring the Wildcats second relay entry in the 400 medley relay.
Tammadge touched the wall in a winning time of 4:53.63 in the 500 free. Her time was nearly half a second faster than her earlier time in the preliminaries, when she also has the fastest mark out of 41 competitors. In the finals Tammadge finished just more than six-tenths of a second in front of the runner-up from Princeton with a strong final 200 yards that secured her victory.
Junior Hayley Edwards (Pilesgrove, N.J.) finished fifth in the 500 free with a time of 4:57.69 and Villanova had six different athletes qualify for one of the three finals held on Friday evening. Juniors Leigh Anne Patterson (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Summer Cook (Thornton, Colo.) placed 14th and 16th, respectively, while freshmen Katrin Heider (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) and Sara Jurek (Gilbert, Ariz.) came in 17th and 23rd, respectively.
Two other individual swimming events were held on Friday, including the 200 individual medley and the 50 free. Senior Lindsey Hagens (Westboro, Mass.) and junior Laura McGlaughlin (West Chester, Pa.) each qualified for the "B" level final in the 200 IM, with Hagens finishing in 13th place (2:08.23) from an original field of 52 swimmers. McGlaughlin had a time of 2:08.98 in the finals and finished in 15th place.
Junior Natalie Elphick (Durban, South Africa) came in 12th in the "B" final of the 50 free with a time of 24.25, one of three races she swam in the 50 free during the day. She registered a time of 24.32 during the preliminaries on Friday morning and had a split of 24.45 in the leadoff leg of the 200 free relay to open the evening session.
Heider, freshman Sarah Aemisegger (Oreland, Pa.) and Jurek all reached the "C" final of the 50 free and placed 19th, 20th and tied for 23rd, respectively.
The top squads for the Wildcats in both the 200 free and 400 medley relays each came in seventh out of 19 entries. Elphick led off the 200 free relay and was followed by Tammadge, Heider and Aemisegger as Villanova finished with a time of 1:37.33. Aemisegger swam the fastest leg of the relay with a split of 23.94 on the anchor leg.
In the 400 medley relay senior Yolana Du Plessis (Boksburg, South Africa) led off and was followed by McGlaughlin, Edwards and Elphick. The Wildcats finished with a time of 3:58.30 and Elphick anchored the lineup with a split of 52.40 over the final 100 meters.
Senior Amanda DiMarco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and sophomore Michelle Hall (North Andover, Mass.) both competed in the 3-meter diving competition. DiMarco finished 19th (210.40) in the preliminaries and Hall came in 34th (145.40).
The schedule on Saturday at DeNunzio Pool will be the same as Friday, with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and the finals starting at 6 p.m. Events to be contested on Saturday include the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 800 free relay and 1 meter diving.
NOTES: In the individual swimming events the top 24 competitors in the preliminaries advance to the finals and are grouped into eight entries each in an "A", "B" or "C" level final ... Eight teams are competing in this weekend's meet ... Tammadge has six individual victories so far this season, including two in the 500 free ...
