Women's Swimming & Diving Splits with Cincinnati and West Virginia
Nov. 13, 2011
MORGANTOWN, W.Va.--In a triangular meet on Saturday afternoon Villanova (4-2) earned a split with Cincinnati and West Virginia in competition at the WVU Natatorium, where the Wildcats had either a first place or a second place finish in 13 of the 16 events on the schedule. Villanova defeated Cincinnati, 198-97, while narrowly falling to the host Mountaineers by a 166-131 score.
Junior Natalie Elphick (Durban, South Africa) was a part of two of the three victories recorded by the Wildcats in the meet. She won the 100 yard freestyle in 52.55 and later swam the leadoff leg of the 400 yard freestyle relay. Villanova won the relay with a time of 3:31.39 and came in just over half a second ahead of the runner-up relay from West Virginia.
Elphick led off the 400 free relay with a split of 52.65 and freshman Katrin Heider (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) secured the first place finish with a split of 52.04 on the anchor leg. Freshmen Sara Jurek (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Sarah Aemisegger (Oreland, Pa.) swam the middle two legs of the winning relay.
The individual 100 free was the only event in which the Wildcats had each of the top two finishers. Elphick was followed in second place by Heider, who recorded a time of 53.06. Heider also was the runner-up in the 200 free, where she touched the wall in 1:52.68. Elphick was second in the 50 free (24.36).
Junior Roxy Tammadge (Durban, South Africa) won the 1650 free by a margin of more than six seconds in the first individual event held in the meet. Tammadge was actually four seconds behind the eventual runner-up from the Mountaineers with 400 yards left in the race before beating that swimmer by 10 seconds over the final 400 yards.
Tammadge was also the runner-up in the 500 free (4:59.16) and junior Hayley Edwards (Pilesgrove, N.J.) was third in the race with a time of 5:03.75. Edwards earlier came in second in the 200 yard butterfly (2:03.67) and finished third in the 100 fly (58.11).
Other second place finishes for Villanova came from senior Yolana Du Plessis (Boksburg, South Africa) in the 100 backstroke, junior Laura McGlaughlin (West Chester, Pa.) in the 100 breaststroke and senior Lindsey Hagnes (Westboro, Mass.) in the 400 individual medley. The Wildcats were also second in the 200 medley relay to start the meet.
Hagens had a time of 4:31.39 in the 400 IM, while McGlaughlin (4:37.76), Tammadge (4:37.86) and junior Summer Cook (Thornton, Colo.) were separated by just two-tenths of a second in the fifth through seventh finishing spots.
In the diving events, senior Amanda DiMarco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) placed second on both the 1-meter (253.20) and 3-meter (259.90) boards.
Villanova has one event remaining prior to the semester break and will compete at the Princeton Invitational during the first week of December. The competition will be held over three days from December 2-4.
