Nov. 13, 2011
MORGANTOWN, W.Va.--In a triangular meet on Saturday afternoon Villanova (2-3) gained a split with Cincinnati and West Virginia, defeating the Bearcats by a score of 164-131 and falling by a final of 190-100 to the host Mountaineers at the WVU Pool. The Wildcats registered five third-place finishes during the meet.
Villanova fared well against Cincinnati in the freestyle events to gain the necessary edge to come out on top at the end. Sophomore Ben Smith (Sudbury, Mass.) came in third in the 200 yard free in 1:44.03 and was less than seven-tenths of a second off the winning pace. Junior Scott Theide (Bethesda, Md.) was right behind in fourth place (1:45.29).
Thiede also led off the 400 freestyle relay in the final event of the meet and was followed by senior Ted Sukramani (Williamsburg, Va.), junior Braden Clarke (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and freshman Jason Moyer (Center Valley, Pa.). The Wildcats registered a time of 3:14.32 and finished third in the relay.
In the 100 free the first four finishers were all from West Virginia, with Thiede and freshman Chris Tamanini (Kingston Twp., Pa.) placing fifth and sixth, respectively, ahead of three swimmers from the Bearcats. Thiede recorded a time of 48.06 and Tamanini touched the wall in 48.39.
Freshmen Jovany Avendano (Paterson, N.J.) and Roy Sung (Wayland, R.I.) came in third in the 100 backstroke and the 200 breaststroke, respectively. Avendano finished in 53.04 and was the only finisher in the top five not from West Virginia. In the 200 breast Sung had a time of 2:14.62 and was followed by classmate tony sipala (South Glastonbury, Conn.) in fifth place (2:18.56).
In the diving events senior Charlie Cornelius (Armonk, N.Y.) placed third on the 3-meter board (186.45) and was fifth on the 1-meter board (166.60).
Villanova has one event remaining prior to the semester break and will compete at the Princeton Invitational during the first week of December. The competition will be held over three days from December 2-4.
