VILLANOVA.--- On Friday, Oct. 27, the Villanova men's and women's swimming & diving teams hosted Penn State for its first home meet of the 2000-01 season. Despite several outstanding individual performances, the Wildcat men were defeated by the Nittany Lions, 171-32, while the Villanova women lost to Penn State by the score of 146-59.
In men's competition, senior diver Brian Mulligan qualified for the NCAA Championships in the one-meter dive. Top finishers in the swimming events for the Wildcat men included sophomore Peter Klimas, who placed third in the 100 yard freestyle (48.09), and junior Jared Rummel who tallied a third place mark in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:13.22).
In women's competition, senior Kristen Olson recorded two first place swims in the meet. Olson finished first in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.05, as well as posting a first place finish in the 100 yard freestyle 52.54. Also registering a first place finish for Villanova was junior Andie Scelsi, who swam a time of 5:04.76 to take the 500 yard freestyle.
Other strong performances for the Wildcat women came from junior Ashley Ellis who posted a second place finish in the 200 yard butterfly (2:07.67), and junior Brooke Corby who placed third in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:22.14).
At the meet's first intermission, the Villanova men's and women's swimming and diving team welcomed back teammate and 2000 U.S. Olympian Maddy Crippen who was in attendance.
The Wildcats will get back into action on Nov. 3, traveling to South Orange, N.J., to take on the Seton Hall Pirates at 5:00 p.m.
