Villanova Posts Strong 180-110 Defeat Over La Salle

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova (1-0) got their season started off on the right foot in the 180-110 victory over La Salle (1-1) Wednesday afternoon. The competition was highlighted by six individual winners as the Wildcats placed first in 12 of the 16 events. The Wildcats opened the afternoon with a strong finish from Lindsey Hagens (Westboro, Mass.), Erin Malone (Sydney, Australia), Hayley Edwards (Pilesgrove, N.J.) and Natalie Elphick (Durban, South Africa) who took the first-place finish in the 400 yard medley relay. After swimming on a winning relay team, Hayley Edwards registered two more wins during the course of the afternoon. She notched a victory in the 200 yard freestyle beating freshman Kaisla Kollanus by only .02 seconds with a time of 1:52.88. Edwards also placed first in the 200 yard butterfly touching the wall at 2:02.56. Lindsey Hagens also had a solid remainder of the meet after her relay win as she snagged first-place 100 yard backstroke with a time of 59.66. Roxy Tammadge (Durban, South Africa) earned a feat in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:12.20. Tammadge finished the race 6.43 seconds ahead of her next competitor. She also notched a first-place finish in the 500 yard freestyle and posted a time of 4:58.43. Proving once again that she is a powerful breaststroker, Laura McLaughlin (West Chester, Pa.) went 2-for-2 and took wins in the 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes (1:05.03, 2:22.51)
Debuting in her first meet, Kaisla Kollanus (Hyvinkaa, Finland) notched a win in the 50 yard freestyle and posted a time of 23.83 while also coming in first place in the 100 yard freestyle at 51.50. Junior diver Lauren Brown (Schnecksville, Pa.) swept the 1-meter and 3-meter board competitions finishing with scores of 274.50 and 271.65, respectively. The Wildcats will next host West Virginia and James Madison Saturday morning at the Pavilion Pool. |
