Wildcats Open Season Next Week at La Salle
Oct. 16, 2009
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Next Friday afternoon at Kirk Pool in Philadelphia, the Villanova men's and women's swimming & diving teams open their respective 2009-10 seasons in a meet at La Salle. Both teams will swim against the host Explorers, while the women's team will also compete against Richmond in a triangular meet. Next week's meet gets underway at 4 p.m.
Villanova has plenty to look forward to as it opens the season. The women's team returns 12 student-athletes from last season, including senior Sarah Czar (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and junior Astrid Armgarth (Linkoping, Sweden). Both scored well at the BIG EAST Championships last season and will be counted on to be consistent scorers in meets this season for the Wildcats. Sophomores Kelley Groves (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Lindsey Hagens (Westboro, Mass.) each come off of strong freshman seasons and Villanova has also brought in one of the most talented recruiting classes in program history with 10 newcomers to the squad.
Sophomore diver Amanda DiMarco (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) scored in the BIG EAST meet on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards as a freshman last season, when she went undefeated in both events in three dual meets against La Salle, Seton Hall and Syracuse. She returns this season to lead the diving corps from the women's team and is joined by junior Kendra Ridley (Harleysville, Pa.) and freshman Amy Zuerndorfer (Concord, Mass.), who will each be looking to make an impact.
On the men's side, seniors Jim Snyder (St. Charles, Ill.) and Jonathan Spindler (Pittsburgh, Pa.) return to lead the team. Spindler competed in the BIG EAST Championships last season in both the 100 and 200 butterfly and picked up one individual win during the season in the 200 fly against Seton Hall. He also was the anchor of the 200 freestyle relay quartet that won a race in last season's opener against La Salle. Like the women's team, Villanova also brings in a talented recruiting class on the men's side. A group of 12 returners are joined by five incoming freshmen, each of whom are capable of making an immediate impact for the team.
The Wildcats return the core of the diving unit on the men's side, as senior James Styles (Staten Island, N.Y.) is back along with sophomores Charlie Cornelius (Armonk, N.Y.) and J. Paul Suydam (New Brunswick, N.J.).
In the season opener against La Salle last season - at the Villanova Swim Center - the Wildcats picked up a win on the women's side (168.5-74.4) while falling on the men's side (139-104).
