VILLANOVA, Pa.-- The Annual St. Thomas of Villanova Day of Service, held on Saturday, Sept. 11th, 2010, proved to be one of the most successful service events to date as the Villanova community joined together to provide aid to the surrounding area.

The Day of Service is a whole day committed to community service in the areas surrounding the university. Over 4,500 volunteers including university staff, faculty, alumni, families and students served at more than 180 service sites throughout Greater Philadelphia. They were joined by hundreds of alumni working at 14 chapters around the country.

Over 400 Villanova Athletics volunteers including student-athletes, coaches, staff and administrators gathered on Saturday morning in preparation for the day and to travel to various service sites.

Kicking off the Day of Service, men's lacrosse and men's soccer aided with set-up in the Pavilion.

Women's basketball traveled to Wayne, Pa. to Our Lady of Assumption Church to help with a cleanup.

Water Polo traveled to Mother's Home, a women's residential shelter in Darby, Pa., to paint office space.

The women's lacrosse team traveled to the Sacred Heart School and Parish in South Philadelphia to paint, garden, weed and help with general landscaping needs.

Men's and women's swimming and diving trekked to Camden, N.J. for a street cleanup from 27th to 36th streets.

Softball aided with travel needs between the various service sites.

Rowing painted at St. Martin of Tours in Philadelphia.

Men's tennis traveled to Vine Street in Philadelphia to perform gardening work at the Holy Redemmer Chinese Parish,

The Philabundance Food Warehouse was the service site of the men's basketball team.

Field Hockey tutored young children at the Baptist Children's Services.

Men's and women's track and field helped with painting needs at the Bache Martin Parish and School.

And the baseball team traveled to Plymouth Meeting, Pa. and cleaned up the park and surrounding area at their home field, Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth.

The St. Thomas of Villanova Celebration happens annually in September every year. The Villanova community begins the academic calandar with a celebration honoring St. Thomas of Villanova, the school's patron saint.
