PHILADELPHIA - Senior Ben Smith and junior Katrin Heider of the Villanova men's and women's swimming & diving teams were named the 2014 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Performers of the Year as announced Tuesday afternoon.
Jason Moyer was also selected to the Academic All-Area Men's Team, while Michelle Hall, Sara Jurek and Kaisla Kollanus were chosen for the Academic All-Area Women's Team. The teams are voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
At the BIG EAST Championships, Smith earned two first-place finishes in the 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly. The Sudbury, Mass., broke a 25-year-old program record in the 100 fly and became the first Villanova male since 1996 to earn gold at the conference championships.
Smith was named to the All-BIG EAST Team in the 800 freestyle relay, 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly and 400 medley relay. The three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star holds a 3.376 GPA while majoring in computer science.
Heider helped lead the women's team to the BIG EAST Championship title. She earned first place in the 100 and 200 freestyle events and earned All-BIG EAST honors in the 50 freestyle. Heider was a member of the winning 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays.
A two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, the Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, native holds a 3.884 GPA while majoring in biology.
Moyer was named to the Academic All-Area Team. The junior holds a 3.352 while majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Moyer was named to the All-BIG EAST Team for the 200 freestyle, 400 medley relay and 800 medley relay.
Hall holds a 3.577 GPA, majors in chemistry and is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star. She was named to the All-BIG EAST Team for the 3-meter board, where she placed third.
Jurek was named to the All-BIG EAST Team for the 100 freestyle, 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay. She was a member of the 200 medley relay team that broke a program record at conference championships. The nursing major is a two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and holds a 3.717 GPA.
Kollanus earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Team for the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relay events and the 400 medley relay. The Hyvinkaa, Finland, native holds a 3.674 GPA as a student in the Villanova School of Business.
