AUBURN, Ala.--In a busy day of competition on Saturday afternoon junior Hayley Edwards (Pilesgrove, N.J.) swam in the 1650 yard freestyle and the 200 butterfly at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center, wrapping up three days of racing at the NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships. Edwards also competed in the 500 free during the meet and made her second appearance at the national championship meet in the last three years.
Edwards opened up competition on Thursday morning when she swam in the preliminaries of the 500 free. She finished with a time of 4:48.42, just off a personal best, and placed 46th overall. Following a day off from racing on Friday, Edwards competed in the preliminaries of the 200 fly and the finals of the 1650 free on Saturday. In the 1650 free Edwards swam to a time of 16:29.89 and came in 29th overall, while in the 200 fly she finished 36th with a time of 1:59.28.
This weekend's championship meet put the stamp on a terrific season for Edwards, who was selected for the NCAA meet after winning ECAC titles in both the 200 fly and the 1650 free. Her time of 1:59.28 in the 200 fly at the NCAA Championships was slightly faster than her time in the finals of the ECAC meet (1:59.55). In the 1650 free at the ECAC Championships, Edwards broke her own meet record in the 1650 free when she touched the wall in 16:17.93, eclipsing the previous mark that she set as a freshman two years ago.
Edwards also earned three All-BIG EAST honors for her efforts at the BIG EAST Championships, where she placed second in the 1650 free and third in the 200 fly. She also led off the Wildcats 800 yard freestyle relay which finished in second place.
