Big Day for Women at BIG EAST Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - It was a huge day for Villanova women's swimming at day two of the conference championships in Indianapolis, Ind. Hayley Edwards and Roxy Tammadge swept the 500 yard freestyle finishing 1-2, respectively, while Erin Malone shattered a university record in the 200 yard individual medley. Leigh Anne Pattersonalso recorded a personal best time in the evening finals.
Hayley Edwards (Pilesgrove, N.J.) and Roxy Tammadge (Durban, South Africa) started off the night strong with a 1-2 finish in the 500 yard freestyle relay. Edwards swam to an impressive 4:43.41 to take home the first place title. Roxy Tammadge also had a great finish as she notched second place with a time of 4:45.77. Leigh Anne Patterson(Cherry Hill, N.J.) finished 11th in the `B' final at a new personal best time of 4:51.31.
The Wildcats continued to put forth great swims in the 200 yard individual medley as Erin Malone (Sydney, Australia) broke a university record, finishing 5th in the finals at 2:00.05. Malone previously set this record earlieri n the day in the preliminaries (2:01.40) and before that, this season at the Frank Elm Invite where she swam 2:02.35. Sara Jurek (Gilbert, Ariz.) finished ninth overall in the event at 2:02.54 and Laura McGlaughlin(West Chester, Pa.) notched 14th place with a time of 2:04.07.
Kaisla Kollanus(Hyvinkaa, Finland) finished out Villanova's individual events for the evening with a 10th place finished in the 50 yard freestyle, coming in at 23.45.
Kollanus also swam alongside Katrin Heider (Bergisch, Germany), Fiona Hardie (Hampshire, England) and Natalie Elphick(Durban South Africa) in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The squad finished seventh at 1:33.95. Villanova is now ranked at fourth place overall at the conference championships headed into day three of competition Friday.
