EAST MEADOW, N.Y.-- Villanova accumulated a total of 90 points and finished in 10th place out of 11 schools at the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships this weekend at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. The Wildcats notched almost all of their points in relay events during the weekend.

The top finish for Villanova in the relays came in the 800 yard freestyle relay. The Wildcats placed eighth in the event with a time of 7:01.70 to earn 22 points towards the team score. The relay included sophomores AJ Mak (Warren, N.J.), Sean Whipkey (McLean, Va.) and Brett Karbach (Glenside, Pa.) ahead of senior anchor Joey Mechak (Rockville, Md.).

Villanova also placed ninth in both the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relays. The 200 yard relay quartet finished in 1:26.38 and featured Whipkey, senior Zach Rambo (Alexandria, Va.), junior William Sepich (Delran, N.J.) and Karbach. In the 400 free relay, the group of Karbach, Whipkey, Rambo and freshman Tony Colalillo (Logansport, Ind.) recorded a time of 3:08.77. Both relay squads picked up 18 points.

Rounding out the relay events were the 200 and 400 yard medley relays, with the Wildcats placing 10th in both events to receive 14 points. The 200 medley squad consisted of Sepich, freshman Justin Stephens (Bloomsburg, Pa.), Colalillo and Rambo. Villanova finished in 1:37.86 in that race and logged a time of 3:33.81 in the 400 medley event. That quartet included freshman Chris Jordan (Holland, Mich.), Stephens, sophomore Jon Spindler (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Whipkey.

 

 

In the individual events, Mechak advanced to the consolation round of the 200 yard butterfly. He opened with a time of 1:53.88 to rate 16th out of 29 entries in the preliminaries. He moved up to 15th in the consolation swim with a time of 1:54.09.

Senior Kiel Costella (Carson City, Nev.) swam the 1,650 yard freestyle race and placed 15th out of 18 competitors with a time of 16:26.79.
