PITTSBURGH, Pa.--Freshman Braden Clarke (Chappaqua, N.Y.) posted a 13th-place finish in the consolation final of the 100 yard backstroke on Friday evening at the 2010 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships at Trees Pool. Heading into the final day of competition on Saturday, Villanova stands in ninth place with 84 team points.

In preliminary round racing on Friday morning, Clarke was in 14th place in the 100 back after posting a time of 52.00 seconds even to lead three Wildcats that were competing in the event. He did even better in the finals later in the day, as his time of 51.42 placed him 13th overall and was a new season-best time. Junior Chris Jordan (Holland, Mich.) and freshman Jordan Bickhart (Wyomissing, Pa.) came in 24th and 25th, respectively, with times of 53.96 and 54.25 in the preliminaries.

Clarke helped Villanova earn team points not only in the 100 back but also in the 400 yard medley relay on Friday evening. He swam the third leg of the race for the Wildcats, who came in ninth out of 10 teams with a time of 3:31.83. Jordan took the leadoff leg for Villanova and was followed by junior Justin Stephens (Bloomsburg, Pa.), while freshman Scott Thiede (Holmdel, N.J.) swam the anchor position.

In the 200 freestyle, Thiede led a contingent of six Wildcat swimmers by finishing 19th in the preliminaries with a time of 1:42.46. He was less than 1.5 seconds off a time that would have advanced him at least to the consolation final. Freshman Russell Paulson (West Chester, Pa.) came in 23rd (1:43.24) in the 200 free and junior Nick Williams (Holmdel, N.J.) followed in 29th place (1:44.15).

Rounding out the Villanova spots in the 200 free were junior Tom Maughan (Park Ridge, N.J.) in 35th place (1:45.60), junior Tony Colalillo (Logansport, Ind.) in 39th (1:46.43) and freshman John Kracke (Marlboro, N.J.) in 41st place (1:47.22).

Clarke and senior Jonathan Spindler (Pittsburgh, Pa.) competed in the preliminaries of the 100 butterfly and finished 25th (51.69) and 34th (53.28), respectively. The two other individual results for the Wildcats on Friday came from sophomore Ted Sukramani (Williamsburg, Va.) and Stephens. Sukramani took 19th place in the 400 individual medley (4:08.45) and Stephens came in 20th in the 100 breast (58.47) in his first sub-1:00 race of the year in that event.
