Hayley Edwards Earns All-BIG EAST Honors in 500 Yard Freestyle

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - For the second time in as many nights junior Hayley Edwards (Pilesgrove, N.J.) turned in an All-BIG EAST performance as she finished third in the finals of the 500 yard freestyle in the BIG EAST Championships at Trees Pool on Thursday night. As a team Villanova standings in eighth place after two days of competition in the conference meet.
Edwards established a personal best time and also swam an NCAA "B" cut qualifying time in the finals of the 500 free, when she touched the wall in 4:43.52, nearly five full seconds faster than her swim in the preliminaries on Thursday morning. Edwards was in fourth place with 50 yards left in the finals and made a surge to move up to third place and garner All-BIG EAST honors. Last night she was part of an all-conference performance on the 800 yard freestyle relay squad.
As always the freestyle events are a strong point for the Wildcats and Edwards was one of three scorers the team had in the 500 free. Junior Roxy Tammadge (Durban, South Africa) placed seventh with a time of 4:47.90 in the finals and junior Leigh Anne Patterson (Cherry Hill, N.J.) came in 14th in 4:52.38.
Villanova started off the Thursday evening session with a successful performance in the 200 free relay, in which the team registered a fifth place finish. Junior Natalie Elphick (Durban, South Africa) led off the relay and freshman Sara Jurek (Gilbert, Ariz.) followed with a team-best split of 23.15 on the second leg. Freshmen Kayra Zsiga (Glendale, Ariz.) and Katrin Heider (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) swam the second half of the relay and the Wildcats finished only a little over a second off the all-conference pace set by the top three teams.
Heider had a 50 free split of 23.31 on the anchor leg of the relay and also came in 11th in the finals of the individual 50 free race, when she produced a time of 23.40. Heider stood in 15th place in the 50 free after the preliminaries but lowered her time by just over a quarter of a second in the finals and jumped up four spots to her 11th place finish.
The meet resumes at 10 a.m. on Friday morning with the swimming of the day's preliminary events, while the finals will be held during the evening session starting at 6 p.m. Friday's events include the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 400 medley relay.
NOTES: The top three finishers in each event are named All-BIG EAST performers for that event ... Edwards time in the 500 free was less than one second away from the cutoff time that was accepted to the NCAA Championships last year ... She is the two-time defending champion in the 1650 free and last year earned individual All-BIG EAST accolades in that race as well as the 200 fly. COMPLETE VILLANOVA RESULTS
