Thiede Has Top Individual Performance For Wildcats on Second Day of BIG EAST Meet

Villanova junior placed 21st in the 50 freestyle, led off the 200 free relay

Villanova is in ninth place after two days of competition at the BIG EAST Championships.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - On the second night of competition in the BIG EAST Championships the top performance for Villanova came from junior Scott Thiede (Bethesda, Md.) at Trees Pool on Thursday, where the Wildcats are currently in ninth place midway through the meet. Thiede swam individually in the 50 yard freestyle on Thursday morning and also led off his team's 200 yard freestyle relay during the evening session.

In the preliminaries of the 50 free Thiede swam a personal best time of 20.82 and came in 21st out of 46 competitors. He also led off the 200 free relay with a split of 21.11 and Villanova went on to finish in eighth place in the relay to earn 22 points towards the team score. Thiede was followed in the lineup by sophomore Kyle Grant (Winnetka, Ill.), senior Ted Sukramani (Williamsburg, Va.) and freshman Jason Moyer (Center Valley, Pa.).

Moyer anchored the relay with a time of 20.74 and had the fastest split for the Wildcats after leading off both the 800 free relay and the 200 medley relay in competition a day earlier on Wednesday night.

Freshman Chris Tamanini (Kingston Twp., Pa.) also competed in the preliminaries of the 50 free and finished in 39th place with a time of 21.93.

In the preliminaries of the 200 individual medley sophomore Ben Smith (Sudbury, Mass.) touched the wall in 24th place (1:54.47) and was followed by freshmen Roy Sung (Wayland, R.I.) and tony sipala (South Glastonbury, Conn.) in 34th place (1:56.64) and 38th place (1:57.63), respectively.

A trio of Villanova swimmers raced in the preliminaries of the 500 free, which kicked off Thursday's morning session. Sukramani came in 25th overall (4:35.20) and was followed by junior Russell Paulson (West Chester, Pa.) in 30th place (4:38.38) and junior Jordan Bickhart (Wyomissing, Pa.) in 44th place (4:47.87).

The meet resumes at 10 a.m. on Friday morning with the swimming of the day's preliminary events, while the finals will be held during the evening session starting at 6 p.m. Friday's events include the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 400 medley relay.
