Wildcats Win Six Events But Fall in Close Meet at Seton Hall, 159-137
Jan. 18, 2012
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Junior Scott Thiede (Bethesda, Md.) won three individual races and also led off a winning relay for Villanova (3-4) in a dual meet at Seton Hall (8-1), where the Wildcats fell in a close meet by a final score of 159-137 at Arthur E. Imperattore Natatorium on Tuesday afternoon. Thiede was the individual winner in the 50, 100 and 200 yard freestyle races and closed out the day by helping lead the 200 yard freestyle relay squad to a victory.
The outcome of the meet hung in the balance until the final individual swimming event thanks to several strong Villanova efforts. In addition to the three individual wins by Thiede, sophomore Ben Smith (Sudbury, Mass.) and freshman Jovany Avendano (Paterson, N.J.) were victorious in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke, respectively.
At the start of the meet the Pirates opened with victories in the 400 medley relay and the 1000 free before the Wildcats came back to win four of the next six events. Villanova occupied the top three finishing spots in the 200 free, in which Thiede touched the wall first with a winning time of 1:46.85. Freshman Jason Moyer (Center Valley, Pa.) was second (1:47.15) and junior Russell Paulson (West Chester, Pa.) third (1:47.72).
Next up was Avendano, who won the 100 back with a time of 52.99 and swam to a margin of victory of just over half a second. This was the second win of the season for Avendano and his first in the 100 back. He previously won the 200 back versus La Salle in the season opener.
Two events later Thiede went back-to-back with wins in the 50 free and the 100 free. He registered a time of 22.03 in the 50 free and won the 100 free with a mark of 47.99. In the latter race Thiede held off sophomore teammate Kyle Grant (Winnetka, Ill.), who touched the wall second in 48.41.
Smith won the second-to-last swimming event when he captured the 100 fly, with Grant placing second (53.81) and senior Marc Maurizi (Lancaster, Pa.) fourth (55.76).
In the 200 free relay which wrapped up the meet the Wildcats posted a winning time of 1:27.75 and came in just under three-tenths of a second ahead of the top Seton Hall relay squad. Thiede led off for Villanova and was followed by Grant, Moyer and junior Braden Clarke (Chappaqua, N.Y.). In the third leg of the relay Moyer had the fastest split for the Wildcats at 21.71.
Villanova will host Providence on Saturday in the only combined men's and women's dual home meet of the season. The team will honor its seniors in a Senior Day ceremony as part of the meet. Diving events will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Villanova Swim Center, with the Senior Day ceremony slated for approximately 12:15 p.m. The 13-event swimming program will follow, starting at 12:30 p.m. COMPLETE VILLANOVA RESULTS
