PROVIDENCE, R.I.I - Villanova men's swimming and diving took home a 158-71 win at Providence Saturday afternoon. The meet was highlighted by top-finish sweeps in four events and 10 first-place finishes at the conference event.
The Wildcats started off strong as the squad of Kyle Grant (Winnetka, Ill.), Tony Sipala (South Glastonbury, Conn.), Chris Tamanini (Kingston Twp., Pa.) and Ben Smith (Sudbury, Mass.) got the first first-place finish of the day finishing the 400 yard medley relay in 4:02.75.
Villanova featured three swimmers with multiple victories throughout the 13 event meet. Ben Smith went on to a first-place finish in both the 200 yard butterfly (2:17.30) and the 200 yard individual medley (2:12.85). Jason Moyer (Coopersburg, Pa.) earned a pair of wins in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.45 and in the 100 yard freestyle, finishing before his competitors at 53.88. Lastly, Scott Thiede (Bethesda, Md.) took home first in both the 400 yard freestyle with a time of 4:12.25 and the 200 yard freestyle with a 1:56.19 finish.
Kyle Grant also notched a top finish in the 200 yard backstroke, touching the wall at 2:12.44. Russell Paulson (West Chester, Pa.) earned first place in the 800 yard freestyle (8:28.89) and Ryan Murtha (Philadelphia, Pa.) notched top place in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:38.94).
The men and women Wildcats are back in action January 25-26 when they take on conference rivals Pitt. The meet will mark the final home meet of the season.
