Seniors Lead Wildcats to Victory in Last Home Meet

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- In the last home meet of the 1997-98 season and the last for four Wildcat seniors, the Villanova men and women's swimming and diving team each swam to victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Friday, Feb. 6, at the Villanova Swim Center.

The Wildcat men beat Rutgers by the score of 115-82, while the women defeated the Scarlet Knights 120-88.

In a day in which they were honored, Wildcat seniors Ann Marie Adams, Jarad Lucan and Gus Membiela each took a lead role in leading the team to victory in their last ever home meet.

Adams posted a victory in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:38.22. On the men's side, Lucan and Membiela each tallied two victories apiece. Lucan broke the Villanova pool record in the 100 yard freestyle (45.94) held by 1997 graduate Tom Tracey, and won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.34. Membiela also took home dual victories, winning the 200 yard individual medley (1:57.65) and the 100 yard backstroke (54.56).

A big day was also had by the Villanova diving team, as the Wildcats swept the Scarlet Knights in both the one meter and three meter dives. Junior Tibby Fogarty led the Villanova women with victories in the one meter dive (231.38) and the three meter dive (237.25). Freshman Brian Mulligan took both events for the Wildcat men, with victories in the one meter (256.58) and three meter dives (26.55).

The Wildcats head to Pittsburgh next for the Big East Championships to be held on February 6-8.
