Villanova Falls At Virginia

VILLANOVA, Pa. - On Saturday, Jan. 31, at the University of Virginia, the Villanova men and women's swimming and diving teams fell to the host Cavaliers despite numerous outstanding individual performances on both sides. The Wildcat men lost to Cavaliers by the score of 121-98, while the women dropped a hard fought loss 120-103.

The Villanova men were led by their seniors, with Jarad Lucan and Gus Membiela each posting individual victories. Lucan finished in first place in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 46.38, while also placing third in the 200 yard freestyle with a season-best time of 1:42.89. Membiela tallied a victory in the 200 yard breaststroke, swimming a time of 2:15.75.

On the women's side, four different individuals tallied victories to spark the Wildcats. Freshman Kate Volz led the team with two victories, winning the 500 (5:01.50) and the 1,000 yard (10:11.91) freestyles.

In a day led by Villanova's fabulous freshmen, two other rookies also stepped to the forefront. Kristen Olson posted a victory in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.04, while Katie Armitage won the 200 yard breaststroke (2:23.34). Junior Jackie Gruters also contributed an individual victory with a win in the 200 yard backstroke (2:05.80).

The Wildcats return home for their next meet on Friday, Feb. 6, when they will face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 6 p.m.
