Villanova Swimming Drops Meet to Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - At the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool on Saturday, Jan. 24, the Villanova women's swimming and diving team lost to the host Panthers 139-102, while the men were defeated 145-84.
In the loss, freshman Katie Armitage led the way for the Wildcats with two individual victories. Armitage posted a victory in the 1000 yard freestyle in a time of 10:09.23, in addition to winning the 200 yard individual medley (2:08.69). Fellow freshman Kristen Olson also tallied an individual victory, winning the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.08, while junior Liz Lauwaert won the 100 yard freestyle event (52.86).
Villanova was outstanding in relay competition as the Wildcats posted victories in both the 400 yard relay medley and the 200 yard relay freestyle. In the 400 yard relay medley, juniors Jackie Gruters, Kristin Stretanski and freshmen Danielle Macejka and Olson beat the Panthers, swimming a time of 3:54.61. In the 200 relay freestyle, Lauwaert, Gruters, Olson and sophomore Tara Brock brought home a victory in 1:37.57.
On the men's side, three Wildcat swimmers tallied individual victories. Senior Jarad Lucan won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.53, while sophomore Vince Allegra won the 100 yard freestyle in 47.13. Junior John Proto also tallied a victory, with a win in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:19.17).
In relay competition, sophomore Brian Finucane, freshman R.C. Thompson, Lucan and Allegra teamed up to defeat the Panthers in the 200 yard relay freestyle in a time of 1:26.91.
The Wildcats next compete at the University of Virginia against the Cavaliers on Jan. 31 at 12:30 p.m.
