Wildcats Compete at Florida Atlantic
After completing their Christmas training in Boca Raton, FL., the Villanova men and women's swimming and diving team competed at Florida Atlantic University on Saturday, Jan. 10. Against the likes of Nebraska, Purdue and meet-host Florida Atlantic, the Wildcats turned in yet another solid performance with a handful of outstanding individual victories.
On the women's side, freshman Katie Armitage tallied three individual victories. Armitage finished first in the 500 yard freestyle against Florida Atlantic with a time of 5:01.91.She also finished first in the 400 yard individual medley versus the FAU Owls with a time of 4:34.46 and first in the same event against Nebraska in 4:54.56. Junior Jackie Gruters turned in dual victories with wins in the 100 (1:08.18) and 200 yard backstroke (2:10.42) versus Florida Atlantic. Freshman Katherine Volz had two victories for the Wildcats in the 100 yard freestyle against Florida Alantic and Nebraska (10:22.89). Kristin Stretanski finished first in the 100 yard breaststroke against Florida Atlantic (1:08.18).
In relay competition, the women's 400 yard freestyle relay team defeated Nebraska in a time of 3:40.19.
The Villanova men also had an outstanding meet tallying three individual victories, in addition to one relay win. Freshman Cass Tokarski posted two individual victories, winning the 100 yard butterfly event (4:26.86) versus Florida Atlantic and the 200 yard butterfly (2:00.74) against the Owls. Freshman Tom Dion also had a victory, in the 500 yard freestyle against Florida Atlantic. In relay competition, the 400 freestyle relay team of sophomore Vince Allegra, sophomore Brian Finucane, freshman Duane Couture and freshman R.C. Thompson swam to victory in 3.22.95 against the Owls of Florida Atlantic.
