Villanova Swimming & Diving Defeats UMBC
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- On Friday, Nov. 7, the Villanova women's swimming and diving team defeated the University of Maryland-Baltimore County 135-101, while the men defeated the visiting Retrievers 121.50-109.50, in a dual meet held at the Villanova Swim Center on the campus of Villanova University.
In the women's relay competition, the Wildcats were victorious in the 400 yard relay medley, led by juniors Jackie Gruters and Kristin Stretanski and freshmen Danielle Macjka and Kristen Olson who posted a time of 4:00.14.
Olson and Stretanski was also outstanding on the individual end, as each notched two victories. Stretanski recorded victories in both the 200 yard individual medley (2:11.03) and the 100 yard freestyle (53.60), while Olson tallied wins in the 50 yard freestyle (24.10) and 500 yard freestyle (5:08.10). Individual victories were also had on Friday, in the women's 1000 yard freestyle by freshman Katie Armitage (10:13.92), the 200 yard freestyle by freshman Kate Volz (1:56.31), the 200 yard butterfly by senior Anne-Marie Adams (2:06.57), and the 200 yard backstroke by Gruters (2:07.25).
In men's relay competition, the Wildcats and Retrievers tied in the 400 yard relay freestyle, each recording identical 3:12.11 times. The Wildcat team was composed of freshmen R.C. Thompson and James Fry, and sophomores Brian Finucane and Vince Allegra.
Senior Jarad Lucan was the Villanova men's lone dual event winner, posting wins in the 100 yard freestyle (46.77) and the 500 yard freestyle (4:42.80). Individual victories were also recorded by Allegra in the 50 yard freestyle (21.84) and senior Gus Membiela in the 200 yard individual medley (1:55.42).
In diving competition, freshman Brian Mulligan won both the one meter (219.60) and three meter (197.25) dive events.
The Wildcats return to action on November 20-22, when they will compete at the University of North Carolina, in the Nike Cup.
