Tigers Claw Way to Victory Over `Cats in Swimming & Diving Action

Villanova, Pa.--- On Saturday, Dec. 11, in swimming and diving competition, the Villanova men and women's swimming & diving teams hosted the Princeton Tigers in a meet held at the Villanova Swim Center. The Wildcats were swept by Princeton, with the women losing to the Tigers, 176-124, and the men falling by the score of 195-85.

Junior Kristen Olson was the top performer for the Villanova women, taking victories in the 50 yard (24.32), 100 yard (53.08) and 200 yard (1:52.89) freestyle events. Freshman Andie Scelsi had one of the best meets of her young career, setting a pool record in the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:02.57. Scelsi was also victorious in the 500 yard freestyle (4:57.80) in the day's meet. Sophomore Val Mesplier also tallied a first place finish, winning the 200 yard butterfly (2:07.93).

In women's relay competition, the Villanova 200 yard freestyle relay team of Olson, seniors Tara Brock and Julie Lapinsky and freshman Katie Long won the event in 1:37.65.

In Saturday's men's swimming action, sophomore Greg King took the win in the 200 yard butterfly (1:54.82), while freshman Andrew Harbuck (1:57.73) won the 200 yard I.M. The Wildcat 200 yard freestyle relay team of King, senior Duane Couture, and freshmen Peter Klimas and Jared Rummel finished first in a time of 1:29.00.

Villanova's outstanding junior diver Brian Mulligan maintained his stellar diving with yet another win. Mulligan won the one-meter dive with a score of 298.94, taking third in the three-meter. The Wildcats will resume action on January 15, as they host UMBC at 1:00 p.m.
