Wildcat Women Take Fifth at Big Al Open
Freshman Emily Mayo placed in the top five of three individual events

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Villanova women's swimming & diving team placed fifth with 281 team points at the Big Al Open over the weekend.

The Wildcats competed against Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Rider and Columbia in preliminary events Friday and finals Saturday and Sunday. Host Princeton took the meet with 1,113 team points.

A team of freshman took third in the 800 freestyle relay as Mary Snyder, Emily Mayo, Kristin Haufler and Erin Merkle finished with a time of 7:28.02.

Snyder, Haufler, Mayo and fellow classmate Megan Conrad took a seventh-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:28.41.

Mayo finished in the top five of three individual events. She took third in the 500 freestyle with a 4:51.71, more than a five second improvement from her preliminary time (4:56.73). Mayo also finished fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:50.74) and in the 1650 freestyle (16:55.90).

Freshman Megan Conrad finished seventh in the 200 backstroke with a final time of 2:03.29.

Villanova was without Kaisla Kollanus, Katrin Heider, Sara Jurek, Jessica Randolph and Fiona Hardie as the five competed at the AT&T Winter National Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.



Kollanus, Hardie, Jurek and Randolph took ninth in the 4x50 freestyle relay (1:33.21). The quartet also took 10th in the 4x100 freestyle relay (3:23.10) and the 4x200 relay (7:20.92), and 14th in the 4x50 freestyle relay (1:46.11).

The Wildcats jump back in the pool for competition in 2014 at NC State on Jan. 10.
