Women Win, Men Fall as Swimming & Diving Splits With Yale
Nov. 23, 1999 Villanova, Pa.-- In its second home meet of the 1999-00 season, the Villanova University swimming and diving teams split with the visiting Yale Bulldogs. The Wildcat women defeated Yale 154-141, while the Villanova men lost to the Bulldogs 187-95. Leading the `Cats' charge for the women's team was junior Kristen Olson who registered three individual victories on the day. Olson won the 200 yard freestyle (1:51.24), the 50 yard freestyle (24.31), and the 100 yard freestyle (51.89), to continue her outstanding season. Freshman Andie Scelsi and senior Julie Lapinsky each tallied dual wins. Scelsi finished first in both the 200 yard butterfly (2:07.50), and the 500 yard freestyle (4:58.84), while Lapinsky won in the 100 (59.40) and 200 (2:07.94) yard backstrokes. Three other Wildcats got into the mix with one win apiece. Junior Kate Volz was victorious in the 1,000 yard freestyle (10:06.19), freshman Deann Fryberger won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:06.59, and sophomore Brooke Corby placed first in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:19.70). In relay competition, Villanova's 200 yard medley relay team of Lapinsky, Fryberger, Valerie Mesplier and Katie Long won in a time of 1:48.66. The Wildcat men were once again led by the superior diving of junior Brian Mulligan. Mulligan swept the diving competition by winning both the one-meter and three-meter dives with scores of 176.55 and 157.60 respectively. In men's swimming action, senior co-captain Duane Couture was victorious in the 200 yard individual medley (2:00.34), while freshman Andrew Harbuck won the 100 yard butterfly (53.74). In relay competition, the Villanova 400 yard freestyle relay team of Peter Klimas, Jared Rummell, Greg King and Andrew Harbuck won in a time of 3:14.76.
The Wildcats will resume action on Dec. 2-4, traveling to Charlottesville, Va., to compete in the Virginia Invitational.
