Women drop to Penn State in Afternoon Meet

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Women's swimming and diving (2-2) fell short in an afternoon meet at State College to the Nittany Lions Saturday 177-116; the loss was their second of the season. The meet featured individual first-place finishes from Kaisla Kollanus (Hyvinkaa, Finland), Sara Jurek (Gilbert, Az.) and Erin Malone (Sydney, Australia).
Freshman Kaisla Kollanus had a stellar afternoon finishing in top place in the 50, 100 and 200 yard freestyles. Kollanus won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 51.23. In the 50 freestyle she touched the wall second in 23.68 and earned third place at 1:51.39.
Erin Malone notched two individual wins in the 100 yard breaststroke, registering a time of 1:04.48 and a time of 2:18.91 in her first-place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke. Laura McLaughlin (West Chester, Pa.) finished second behind Malone at 2:22.83.
Sara Jurek got her first top-finish of the season in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:09.65.
In the 200yard butterfly Hayley Edwards (Pilesgrove, N.J.) took second place, touching the wall at 2:04.36. Edwards also earned another second place finish in the 100 yard butterfly (57.06) and teammate Fiona Hardie (Hampshire, England) notched third place (57.57).
Two Wildcats registered top-finishes in the 500 yard freestyle. Senior Roxy Tammadge (Durban, South Africa) finished second (4:59.11), while Katrin Heider (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) took third place (5:04.21).
A Villanova 200 freestyle relay team featuring Kaisla Kollanus, Katrin Heider, Natalie Elphick (Durban, South Africa) and Sara Jurek secured a first-place victory due to an exhibition rule. The four girls crossed the finish line with a combined time of 1:36.70.
The Wildcats will travel to Rutgers for the Rutgers Invitational next weekend on Nov. 16-18.
