Swimming & Diving Falls to Penn State in Season Opener

The Villanova University men and women's swimming and diving teams traveled to State College, Pa., on Saturday, Oct. 30, to open up the 1999 season against the Penn State Nittany Lions at the University Park Aquatic Club. The Wildcat men lost to the nationally ranked Nittany Lions, 212-70, while the Villanova women lost to Penn State by the score of 179-120.

The day was not without its highlights for the `Cats however. In the 200 yard individual freestyle, junior Kristen Olson was victorious with a time of 1:52.50. Olson also took first place in the 100 yard freestyle, crossing the finish in 52.46.

Villanova took the first two spots in the 200 yard breaststroke on Saturday, with freshman Deann Fryberger winning her first collegiate race in 2:22.15, and sophomore Brooke Corby taking second in 2:23.07. The Wildcats also placed first and second in the 500 yard freestyle, where freshman Andie Scelsi won with a time of 4:59.63, and junior Katherine Volz finished second in 5:02.34. Villanova's junior Katie Armitage was first in the 200 yard individual medley, while Corby finished right behind Armitage in 2:10.54. Also victorious for the `Cats was their 400 yard freestyle relay team comprised of Olson, seniors Tara Brock and Julie Lapinsky and freshman Katie Long.

For the Villanova men, sophomore Greg King placed second in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:54.40 and second in the 100 yard butterfly (52.11). The Wildcats also took two more second place finishes on the day. Freshman Fabian Lopez was second in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:16.02), while fellow freshman Peter Klimas was second in the 500 yard freestyle (5:04.42). Senior co-captain Duane Couture tallied a third place time in the 100 yard freestyle (48.71).

In diving competition, junior Brian Mulligan finished second in the three-meter dive (275.33) and third in the one-meter dive (292.85). For the Wildcat women, freshman Christina Rubino was fourth in both the one-meter (178.80) and three-meter dives (163.87), while fellow freshman Anne Lindsay was fifth in the one-meter dive (157.27).

The Wildcat men and women will resume competition on Nov. 20, hosting LaSalle and Virginia Tech at 1:00 p.m. The Wildcat divers will travel to LaSalle on that same day to compete at 1:00 p.m.
