Freestyle Events Help Wildcats Post Two Victories on Final Day of Quad Meet

STORRS, Conn. - Thanks to victories in two individual events and one relay Villanova (3-1) finished its two day quadrangular meet at Connecticut by beating the host Huskies as well as Georgetown while losing to Rutgers by a narrow deficit. The meet wrapped up at Wolff-Zackin Natatorium on Saturday morning with the Wildcats winning three races, all coming in freestyle events.
Villanova defeated Connecticut by a score of 197.5-155.5 and posted a 267-86 margin over the Hoyas, while the score versus the Scarlet Knights was a 200-153 loss. In all the Wildcats finished the meet by winning seven races (five individual, two relays), placing second in eight others and also claiming three third place finishes.
Freshman Katrin Heider (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) was a part of two wins on Saturday, winning the 100 yard freestyle and also anchoring the victorious 400 yard freestyle relay squad. Juniors Roxy Tammadge (Durban, South Africa) and Hayley Edwards (Pilesgrove, N.J.) came in first and second, respectively, in the 500 free and Edwards was also the runner-up in the 100 butterfly.
Heider won the 100 free with a time of 51.95 and touched the wall just ahead of junior teammate Natalie Elphick (Durban, South Africa), who tied for second place with a time of 52.23. The pair also bookended the 400 free relay win for Villanova, with Elphick leading off and Heider swimming the anchor leg. Elphick had the fastest split on the relay for the Wildcats at 52.37, while Heider nearly matched that mark with a 52.41 split.
In the 500 free Tammadge, Edwards and junior Leigh Anne Patterson (Cherry Hill, N.J.) wound up placing first, second and fourth out of 16 entries, matching their exact finishing spots from the 1000 free race held on Friday evening. Tammadge won with a time of 4:59.75, Edwards followed in 5:01.18 and Patterson touched the wall in 5:04.51.
Edwards swam a close race in the 100 fly and finished as the runner-up in 57.01, less than a tenth of a second behind the Taylor Curado of Rutgers, whose winning time was 56.92. Heider finished fourth in the 100 fly race for Villanova with a time of 58.21.
The successful weekend ended on a strong note for the Wildcats with the team having the first and third place quartets in the 400 free relay. The winning lineup of Elphick, Edwards, freshman Sarah Aemisegger (Oreland, Pa.) ending up with a time of 3:31.39. The "B" entry for Villanova had a time of 3:36.02 and featured freshman Sara Jurek (Gilbert, Ariz.) on the leadoff leg followed by classmates Clara Bracy (Bentonville, Ariz.) and Kayra Zsiga (Glendale, Ariz.) ahead of Tammadge in the anchor spot.

Villanova returns to action on Saturday, November 12 when it competes in a triangular meet against Cincinnati and West Virginia beginning at 1 p.m. in Morgantown, W.Va.
