Wildcats Drop to West Virginia in Homecoming Weekend Meet

The Wildcats (0-2) were handed their second loss of the season in a meet against West Virginia Saturday afternoon. The final score was 174-113 and the meet was highlighted by three individual winners and a 200 yard freestyle relay victory.

Russell Paulson (West Chester, Pa.) and Ben Smith (Sudbury, Mass.) notched their second and third individual first-place finishes of the season, respectively, and also Tony Sipala (South Glastonbury, Conn.) earned a first-place finish.

Paulson touched the wall first in the 500 yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 4:53.86. Teammate Scott Theide (Bethesda, Md.) earned the second-place finish in the race.

Ben Smith earned a first-place finish in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 52.18, while Jason Moyer (Coopersburg, Pa.) would post second place.

Villanova posted a top-three finish in the 200 yard IM as Tony Sipala (2:04.45) came in first, followed by Nikolai Tchobanov (Brewster, N.Y.) (2:04.53) and Pat Sullivan (Lowell, Mass.) (2:09.78).

In the last event of the afternoon, the Wildcats came through and took the first place spot in the 200 yard freestyle relay finishing with a time of 1:28.55. The victorious relay team consisted of Scott Thiede, Kyle Grant (Winnetka, Ill.), Ben Smith and Braden Clarke (Chappaqua, N.Y.) as the anchor.



Villanova is back in action next weekend when they travel to Rutgers to compete against Connecticut, Georgetown and Rutgers Saturday and Sunday.
