Women Defeat La Salle 168.5 - 74.4 in Season Opener

Villanova, Pa. - In their meet against La Salle Friday, the Villanova women finished first in 11 of their 13 events, with four athletes taking home two place finishes, to give them the 168.5 -74.4 win. Junior A.J. Mak (Warren, N.J.) had a big performance for the men, taking home two wins in the 139-104 loss. The Villanova women swept the 1 meter and 3 meter diving events earning 32 points. Freshman Amanda DiMarco (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) took first place in both events posting scores of 258.23 (1 mtr) and 293.48 (3 mtr) in her college debut. Finishing second and third place respectively were Seniors Lindsay Davis (Bethel Park, Pa.) and Danielle Trinkner (Somerdale, N.J.). The Wildcat women received 16 points sweeping the 200 yard IM. Freshman Lindsay Hagens took first with a time of 2:06.46, followed by Sophomore Astrid Amrgarth (Linkoping, Sweden) and Senior Kerri McIlvain (Philadelphia, Pa.). Junior Shannon Dwyer (Hicksville, N.Y.) won two events for the Wildcats. She took home first place in the 1000 free with a time of 10:19.20 and the 100 free finishing in 52.15. Junior Sarah Czar (Egg Harbor Twp., N.Y.) recorded 18 points in the meet finishing first in both her events. Czar had a time of 1:53.10, more than two seconds faster than her competition in the 200 free, and finished in 52.15 in the 100 yard free. The fourth Wildcat to take home two first place finishes was Hagens. Along with winning the 200 free, her time of 2:02.34 in the 200 back was more than eight seconds faster then her closest opponent.
On the men's side, Mak added 18 points to the total with wins in both the 1000 free and the 500 free. His times of 10:08.30 and 4:53.52 respectively, were each more than two seconds faster than his competitors.
Other first place finishers for the men were freshman Marc Maurizi (Lancaster, Pa.) who took home first in the 200 fly (1:58.64) in his first colligate meet. Junior Sean Whipkey (McLean, Va.) won the 100 free with a time of 48.01. The men's B relay team also took home a first place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:29.11 to earn the Wildcats 11 points. For their next meet, Villanova will travel to New Brunswick, N.J. to face Rutgers and Connecticut on October 31st and November 1st. |
