Wildcat junior Rebecca Koch broke the Villanova Swim Center pool record in the 500 yard freestyle on Friday with a time of 4:51.23.

VILLANOVA, PA. - On Friday, Oct. 25, in the first meet of the 2002-2003 season for the Villanova swimming & diving team, Wildcat junior Rebecca Koch (Sugarland, Texas/ Clements HS) broke the Villanova Swim Center pool record in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:51.23. Koch's swim helped the `Cats roll to a 158-71 victory over the La Salle Explorers. The Villanova men were defeated by La Salle on Friday in a tight down to the wire contest, 133-100.
In the 500 freestyle, Koch got off to a fast start and held off senior All-American Maddy Crippen to win by 0.25 seconds.
The Wildcats had a number of outstanding swims on Friday evening as five different swimmers tallied individual wins. Koch won two events, taking both the 500 freestyle and the 200 yard freestyle (1:51.69). Sophomore Nichole Werger also won two events, finishing first in the 50 yard freestyle (24.87) and the 100 yard freestyle (53.68).
Three other Wildcats recorded victories for the Villanova women - Crippen took the 200 yard butterfly by crossing the finish line in 2:05.53, junior Kate Shipe won the 200 yard individual medley in 2:11.89, and sophomore Tori Delollo won the 200 yard backstroke in 2:06.74.
Other tremendous performers for the `Cats were senior Andie Scelsi who placed third in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:31.61) in her first competitive meet in over a year since returning from a shoulder injury. Freshman Trista Felty tallied personal bests in two events, registering a three-second drop in the 500 yard freestyle (5:045.42), as well as swimming a personal record in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:18.40)
The Villanova men also had a number of great performances in the meet. Senior Peter Klimas won two individual events, taking the 50 yard freestyle (21.59) and the 100 yard freestyle (47.87). Two other `Cats - Justin Buland and Andrew Harbuck - also posted individual wins. Buland finished first in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:16.14), while Harbuck won the 200 yard individual medley.
In addition, sophomore Bryan Rivera swam a personal best in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:50.21.
Two Villanova relay teams were victorious on Friday. The men's 400 yard medley relay team of Mike Phinney, Harbuck, Adam Walchak and Klimas took first with a time of 46.6 with Klimas swimming an outstanding anchor leg of 46.6. The Wildcat women's 400 yard medley relay team of Delollo, Charysse Johnston, Kiersten Rosenberg and Koch also took first place with a time of 3:56.48.
In the diving competition, the Villanova women swept the one-meter and three-meter dives. Julie Rhines won the one-meter competition with a score of 275.48, while Amy Sfara took the three-meter dive with a score of 254.55. Freshman Colin May placed second in the one-meter dive for the Villanova men with a score of 207.68.
The Wildcats will get back into action on Nov. 1, traveling to South Orange, N.J., to take on Seton Hall at 3:00 p.m.
