VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova (0-1) notched four individual first-place and seven-second place finishes in the 176-110 loss to La Salle (2-0) Wednesday afternoon at the Pavilion Pool. Russell Paulson (West Chester, Pa.) and Nikolai Tchobanov (Brewster, N.Y.) each recorded an individual win, while Ben Smith (Sudbury, Mass.) registered two first-place finishes in the afternoon meet.
Paulson secured his first individual victory of the season in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:00.97. Teammate Jordan Bickhart (Wyomissing, Pa.) was close behind and finished second in the competition, touching the wall at 10:01.89. Paulson also placed second at the meet in the 500 yard freestyle (4:50.64). In a later event, Braden Clarke (Chappaqua, N.Y.) posted a second place finish in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 54.27.
Ben Smith notched the first of his two wins in the 200 yard butterfly and finished in 1:55.31. Smith's second first-place finish came later in the meet in the 100 yard butterfly as he touched the wall at 51.51. Teammate Murphy Smith (Wayne, Pa.) was the runner up (57.41).
Freshman Nikolai Tchobanov earned his first-career win as a Wildcat in the 400 yard IM and posted a time of 4:25.07. Patrick Sullivan (Lowell, Mass.) came in second in the event with a time of 4:38.00.
Other top finishers for Villanova included Kyle Grant (Winnetka, Ill.), who came in second in the 200 yard backstroke (2:01.11) and later, Jason Moyer (Coopersburg, Pa.) snagged a second place finish in the 50 yard freestyle (22.22).
As for the divers, Robert Patten (Liberty Corner, N.J.) took third on the 1-meter board (170.33), while freshman Zach Romanovsky (Marblehead, Mass.) earned the third-place spot in the 3-meter board (186.90).
Up next, Villanova will go head-to-head against West Virginia this Saturday at the Pavilion Pool.
