Women Fifth, Men Eighth After Day One of Big East Championships
Feb. 17, 2000 On Thursday, February 17, the Villanova University men and women's swimming and diving team competed in day one of the 2000 Big East Swimming & Diving Championships in Long Island, N.Y. Day one featured the preliminaries for both the men and women in the 500 yard freestyle, 200 yard individual medley and 50 yard freestyle events.
The Villanova women are fifth after the first day of competition with 121 points. Notre Dame is first with 273, followed by Miami, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Villanova, Rutgers, UConn, Boston College, Syracuse, Georgetown, Seton Hall, St. John's and Providence. The Wildcat women look to improve on their second place finish (to Notre Dame) from one season ago. A Big East title would be Villanova's sixth in nine years, as the `Cats won five consecutive from 1992-96. The `Nova men are in eighth place with 89 points. Pittsburgh leads the men's competition, followed by Rutgers and Notre Dame. The Villanova men will attempt to improve upon a ninth place finish in 1999.
On day one, the Wildcat 200 yard freestyle relay team of Katie Long, Julie Lapinsky, Val Mesplier and Kristen Olson placed second. The men's 200 free relay team of Peter Klimas, Vince Allegra, Greg King, and Duane Couture finished fifth. Other top five finishes included Kate Volz in the 500 freestyle (5th), Kristen Olson in the 50 freestyle (3rd), and Lapinsky, Corby, Mesplier and Tara Brock in the 400 medley relay (2nd).
