Wildcats Lose to Nationally Ranked Virginia in Final Regular Season Meet

Charlottesville, Va.--- In Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday, Jan. 29, the Villanova University swimming and diving teams lost to the nationally ranked University of Virginia Cavaliers. The Wildcat women lost to the No. 7 ranked Cavaliers 123-90. The Villanova men fell to Virginia 132-87.

The Wildcat women got three individual victories in Saturday's events. Senior Julie Lapinsky swam to victory in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.35. Sophomore Brooke Corby placed first in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:24.51). The final victory for Villanova came by way of freshman Andie Scelsi, who tallied a win in the 500 yard freestyle (5:03.07).

In women's relay competition, the Wildcats' 200 yard freestyle relay team of Lapinsky, Tara Brock, Katie Long and Kristen Olson raced to victory in 1:37.43.

For the Villanova men, sophomore Greg King registered a victory in the 200 yard butterfly, crossing the finish line in 1:52.57. A second victory came from freshman Justin Buland who swam 2:12.60 to win the 200 yard breaststroke. Wildcats' junior diver Brian Mulligan won the one-meter event with a score of 255.95, and finished second in the three-meter dive (236.325).

In the men's relay events, the Villanova 200 yard freestyle relay squad of Duane Couture, Peter Klimas, King and Vince Allegra brought home a win with a time of 1:26.70.

The Wildcats ended the regular season against Virginia, and now have three weeks off before heading to Long Island, N.Y. to compete in the 2000 Big East Conference Championships.
