Seniors Shine in Final Home Meet of Season
VILLANOVA, PA. - On Saturday, Jan. 18, the Villanova swimming & diving team took on the likes of Big East rivals Notre Dame and Pittsburgh in its final home meet of the 2003 season. It was the final home meet in the careers of five outstanding Wildcats - Justin Buland, Andrew Harbuck, Peter Klimas, Adam Walchak and Maddy Crippen. The seniors shined for the `Cats on Saturday, combining for six top five finishes.
Crippen won all three of her events in the meet, taking home first place finishes in the 200 yard butterfly (2:03.56), 200 yard breaststroke (2:20.75) and the 1000 yard freestyle (10:03.24).
On the men's side, Klimas had one of the finest meets of his collegiate career. He placed second in the 50 yard freestyle (21.45) and third in the 100 yard freestyle (47.56) against Big East powers Notre Dame and Pittsburgh. Harbuck scored important points for Villanova with a fourth place finish in the 200 yard individual medley (1:57.11). Buland and Walchak also performed well in the meet both individually and in relay competition.
There were a number of other tremendous performances for the Wildcats on Saturday. Junior standout Rebecca Koch broke her own pool record in the 500 yard freestyle with a first place time of 4:51.20. Koch also placed first in the 200 yard freestyle (1:50.78) on the day.
Freshmen Kiersten Rosenberg, Lauren Schulman, Trista Felty and Amanda Jackson also registered top finishes. Rosenberg won the 100 yard freestyle (53.20) and placed third in the 200 yard individual medley (2:08.30). Jackson had a pair of third place finishes - in the 50 yard freestyle (24.79) and the 100 yard freestyle (53.42). In addition, Felty was second in the 200 yard freestyle (1:55.06) and Schulman was third in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:13.47).
Other outstanding performances were had by junior Ryan Costella who was third in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:01.13) and Tori Delollo who was second in the 200 yard backstroke (2:03.37).
In relay competition, the Villanova women took home first place in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:34.05.
On the diving scene, Julie Rhines and Amy Sfara finished two-three for the `Cats in both the one meter and three meter dives. Rhines was second in the one meter (222.85) and the three meter (201.80). Sfara was third in the one meter (212.50) and the three meter (187.40).
Villanova will get back into action on Thursday, Feb. 6, versus St. John's in Jamaica, N.Y. at 4:00 p.m.
