Tammadge Wins 1650 Free in Quad Meet at Pittsburgh
Jan. 16, 2012 PITTSBURGH, Pa. - In a two-day quadrangular meet held at Trees Pool on Friday evening and Saturday morning Villanova (4-5) was defeated by each of three opponents while posting a total of four individual top-three finishes. Meet host Pittsburgh defeated the Wildcats by a score of 244-109 and Villanova also fell to Maryland (247-105) and Richmond (187-162). Junior Roxy Tammadge (Durban, South Africa) provided the lone victory of the meet for the Wildcats with a win in the 1650 yard freestyle.
Overall during the two days of competition Villanova notched one first place showing, two runner-up finishes and one third place ranking. The team also finished fourth in three of the four relays held and recorded five other individual fourth place showings.
Tammadge won the 1650 free with a time of 16:57.44 and surged to the finish line by a margin of more than five seconds over the runner-up from Maryland, who touched the wall in 17:02.66. Junior Hayley Edwards (Pilesgrove, N.J.) finished fourth in the 1650 free with a time of 17:04.63.
Edwards had a productive meet for the Wildcats and also finished fourth in the 500 free (5:01.66) as well as swimming the third leg of the 400 medley relay, in which Villanova finished fourth in a total time of 3:52.62. Edwards had a split of 57.71 swimming a 100 yard butterfly during the relay.
Senior Yolana Du Plessis (Boksburg, South Africa) led off the 400 medley relay and was followed by junior Laura McGlaughlin (West Chester, Pa.), Edwards and junior Natalie Elphick (Durban, South Africa).
Elphick's anchor leg in the 400 medley relay featured a split of 52.79 in the 100 free, which she swam three times during the meet. Elphick closed the meet by swimming the second leg of the 400 freestyle relay in 53.91 and also came in seventh (52.89) in the individual 100 free competition.
The two runner-up finishes for the Wildcats came from Du Plessis and McLaughlin, who placed second in the 100 backstroke (56.23) and 100 breaststroke (1:04.90), respectively. The pair also placed fourth, respectively, in the 200 back (2:04.71) and the 200 breast (2:22.56).
Freshman Katrin Heider (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) finished third in the 100 free with a time of 52.35 and also swam on two of the fourth-place Villanova relays. She led off the 200 free relay in which the Wildcats posted a time of 1:37.12 and also anchored the 400 free relay to a final time of 3:32.55.
Next up on the schedule for the Wildcats is a dual meet at Seton Hall on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
