Wildcats Win 10 Events in 115-70 Victory Over Widener
Jan. 12, 2012
VILLANOVA, Pa.--Junior Scott Thiede (Bethesda, Md.) and freshman Jason Moyer (Center Valley, Pa.) each won two events and Villanova (3-3) returned to action following the holiday break with a 115-70 victory over Widener (0-6) at the Villanova Swim Center on Wednesday evening. Six different swimmers won at least one race for the Wildcats, who swam exhibition once the meet victory had been clinched.
Thiede captured the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke for his second and third individual wins of the season. In the 200 IM he touched the wall in 2:02.38 to post a margin of victory of more than five seconds, while later in the meet he won the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.32. Freshman teammate Roy Sung (Wayland, R.I.) took second in the 100 breast, finishing in 1:04.82. In the final event of the evening Thiede led off the top Villanova relay squad in the 200 yard freestyle relay, in which the Wildcats had the fastest time (1:30.00) out of four competing relay quartets.
The first two collegiate victories for Moyer came in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. He had a winning time of 21.98 in the 50 free to finish ahead of teammates Braden Clarke (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and tony sipala (South Glastonbury, Conn.), who came in with times of 22.61 and 23.06, respectively. Moyer had a time of 54.41 on his way to a win in the 100 fly.
In addition to his runner-up finish in the 50 free, Clarke took first place in the 500 free with a time of 4:57.28 while freshman Chris Tamanini (Kingston Twp., Pa.) finished third, less than four seconds off the pace with a time of 5:00.94.
Sophomore Kyle Grant (Winnetka, Ill.) and juniors Jordan Bickhart (Wyomissing, Pa.) and Russell Paulson (West Chester, Pa.) also won events for Villanova, with each posting a victory in one of the freestyle races. Grant won the 100 free (48.30), Paulson took the 200 free (1:47.17) and Bickhart was victorious in the 1000 free (10:06.02).
Wednesday evening's meet was the first competition in more than a month for the Wildcats, who returned from the semester and holiday break last week to begin training for the second half of their season. Villanova is next in action when it visits Seton Hall on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
